Chapter Nine

Maddie’s friend Sage had wasted no time, Mick thought, as he sat at the long table in the hospital community room. About a dozen patients were there, many of them in wheelchairs, most accompanied by a spouse or friend or family member.

He had Maddie.

He wasn’t the only male in attendance, though he was the only one under the age of eighty. He had to admit, he was glad she’d strong-armed him into this. It wasn’t just the chocolate. Being around Maddie always made him feel better.

She leaned over to whisper in his ear. “Are you superstitious? It’s Friday the thirteenth.”

Every pilot was a little bit superstitious. But he wasn’t in the air, so what was the worst that could happen?

“Nah,” he replied.

If anything, the night had good luck written all over it. Maddie was here, his head felt better than it had in days, and the aroma of melting chocolate filled the room.

And, again, Maddie was here. That trumped everything.

“Homemade chocolates are a wonderful way to treat yourself, or someone you care about,” Sage said, smoothing the Copper Mountain Chocolates apron over her slim hips.

Nice, but not as nice as Maddie’s curvier figure.

“With Valentine’s Day just around the corner,” she continued, while handing out equipment and supplies, “it’s the perfect time to learn to make these chocolate covered salted caramel cups. Nothing says love like these delicious morsels, but I won’t be upset if you may want to keep a few for yourself. The store’s not open around the clock, after all.”

This brought a chuckle from the group.

“However, our focus is on making Valentine’s Day gifts, so you’ll all be going home with a perfectly wrapped package to present to your special someone.”

This town, it seemed, was full of people living out their happily-ever-afters, determinedly evangelizing the paired-up status to anyone currently outside the club.

Worse than ex-smokers, they were.

He noticed Sage watching them, a tiny smile at the corner of her mouth.

“For those of you who haven’t met him,” she said, “let me introduce Mick Meyer. He’s a pilot who flew in to Marietta recently and had a little mishap thanks to the storm. He’s staying with us while he mends.”

Mishap. Mick felt heat prickle up his neck as various people greeted him.

He recognized Cynthia, and Shelli-Ann, the night nurse, a couple of aides and several patients he’d seen in the day room, but trying to put names to the rest of the faces worsened the twinge so he just nodded.

“This class is part of Mick’s physical therapy,” Maddie said, stroking him lightly across the back. “Isn’t he being a good sport?”

Mick’s cheeks grew even warmer, but he stood up halfway and gave a wobbly bow. They seemed a friendly bunch and what the heck, so what if he made a fool of himself in front of a bunch of strangers? If nothing else, there’d be chocolate at the end of it.

“Maddie’s quite persuasive.” He grinned, gesturing to her. “She’s going above and beyond in her efforts to run me out of town.
